Another plane old boring day.

I don't even know why I'm writing a blog about this of all topics. I promised myself I'd write more linux type stuff, and administration stuff in general. Ah well, here goes.

So I woke up fairly early today, at the equivelent of 4AM. Checked out news about the rather heated events going down in the UK, and started packing stuff.
Then suddenly a few short hours later, this happened:

And okay, that was a pun in the title. So yeah, I was having fun wrestling through airport security (three checks, one at entrance, one before passport control, and one afterwards. it would be fine if they actually had the manpower) and then tracking down ever changing gates. That's the plane I finally ended up catching, which in all fairness wasn't too bad. Food sucked, which is to be expected, just bland Pasta w/ Pesto sauce, but on the plus side I did get to drink several litres - a first for me as previously I've only been offered drinks once or twice per flight. The staff were friendly enough, but then again they're paid to be friendly, I won't go into the endless complexities of whether or not they actually cared about us.

Anyway moving swiftly on, during the flight I don't think I fell asleep, but I definitely experienced Incuption.

I'll have to get that* checked out at some point, I don't want to have any silly ide-- OH GOD WHY AM I EVEN WRITING A BLOG.THIS IS MY FIRST TIME BLOGGING "PROPERLY".

And then I had the pleasure of a two hour stop in Frankfurt airport. No sarcasm intended, because frankly how can this be a bad thing:

Airport security was painless here, plenty of manpower and of course no organisational issues. Really a pleasure to pass through.
The final airplane was British operated, and was okay - the staff were friendlier than in the first, somewhat. Then again, I might be biased because they were British.

So then finally, back in the UK I had a brief scare when my bag didn't appear - but then that turned out to be the fault of some fool who got all of his bags confused.
Finally Taxi GET, and due to all the rioting and police measures we were re-routed the long way round (main road closed as a pre-emptive measure? the only thing I'm worried about is I saw riot vans heading down that road).
Anyway I'm back in the UK, and now I have the pleasure of actually doing things. No more holiday as an excuse.

If you're still reading this, I really hope you're feeling okay - after all I'm sure the sheer faggotry of this post is contageous.

Posterous

So it turns out that self-hosted blogs aren't cool anymore, which probably has something to do with the fact that free hosting is easier to get than the average STD. But anyway, I've moved over my entire blog from an underused wordpress install, to Posterous (because Tumblr isn't quite as easy to migrate to, and doesn't have the same posting flexibility).

Oh, and this thing supports autoposting to various other sites, such as a wordpress blog (Hurr durr) or Tumblr. Which I'm fairly sure is also where most people are gonna see this post.

Nothing much more to add, other than that I've gotta stop being lazy and to get back to work on Scarlet.

P.S. Terraria is pretty cool.

Playing around with OpenSSH

Now I know that this isn't really anything special, but I've been bored of the stock OpenSSH login and have been meaning to change both it, and the motd. So yesterday I finally decided to do some research into what could be used for both.
Now the SSH login itself was simple, just a few changes to /etc/ssh/sshd_config:   Banner /etc/issue.net
and obviously I needed to edit /etc/issue.net to match: Example Welcome
So with the easy part done, I started to look into how I could achieve changing the motd successfully, without it being overwritten on a reboot, and also to change according to user/system status. Research revealed a tool called update-motd that worked in conjunction with login to regenerate a MoTD every time a user logged in. This works by running scripts in /etc/update-motd.d/ in order of preference (by filename, 00 running first and 99 running last etc..), and then appends their output to the MoTD. Something simple like Welcome back to `hostname`, `id -u`! Right now it is: `date` and you you have `ps -Afl | wc -l` processes running.
Then there's simply the matter of chmodding the script to be executable. chmod +x filename
Of course neither of my examples are what I'm actually using, but they are so extensible that virtually anything could be achieved. You could even run a script to fire up CMatrix on user login.

New PC

You may be wondering what you're looking at here, Initial assembly was fairly simple, and after a few hours I was online on new PC. Since then, I've been able to run any game with highest quality textures, shaders on high, vsync on as well as anti-aliasing. All on a 21.5 1080p display, at at least 60FPS (sadly I've had to ditch my secondary monitor until I get a new VGA adapter as old one was screwing with the voltage). The only gripe I've had is that I didn't order a controller, rendering some games *cough*VVVVVV and Super Meat Boy*cough* rather more challenging than intended. EDIT: After some basic playing around in the BIOS, I overclocked the CPU to 3.06GHz (results here http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1519692)

Site Migration

After several months of procrastination and delays, I've finally begun the process of moving my site from a combination of various free hosts to my VPS. I've also taken the liberty of moving antoligy.com's site's nameservers to CloudFlare, which is basically cloud based DNS with a bunch of other great features (including a free CDN :3). Most of the site has already been moved, with the exception of the main site, as that is in the process of being redesigned and I'm also working on a CMS to power it. That aside, I'm currently writing up a new article type blogpost, as well as planning out new original content (yes, stuff that people actually might care about). EDIT: I also took down StormBit a few weeks ago, planning to do something fun with the domain at some point. The termination of service notice is available: http://StormBit.net/

RIP Plox.Tor.Hu

Today is a sad day. Plox.Tor.Hu' (hax.tor.hu 's free shell server)'s /home partition died. All the user dirs gone. All the users files are currupted, and unfortunately that includes half my site, unichan.info, gbatemp.net caffeine eggdrop & much more. Here's hoping that they recover some, if not all of it. To be fair, they are the best webhost ever. Even beats most commercial hosting packages (of course, a dedi or even vps pwns it)

In other news, I finally got my google wave invite, but since it's prebeta, there's not much there yet.

Ultimate Collaboration WebApp? yes.
Glorified Email & IM Combo? yes.
Social Network? no way.

Quick note to say: Site overhaul comping up. I'm uh "borrowing" sllide's epic cms script, improving/finishing it. Also I'm gonna fix up the front page with a twitter feed. EDIT: forgot to say that updates.antoligy.com is now live. It's a fuller version of the front-page mini feed I'm making
